2013 Season, Week 1

We begin the 2013 campaign at the classic Fastlandia Circuit with 287 scale miles of racing, during which Brad set a new track record of 09.224, knocking down his previous record by 0.16sec.

This was the first time the DJEPC has visited Fastlandia, and that initial fast class time also goes to Brad with a 09.740. Phoenix has been in a cold snap and the track was quite chilly making it tough to find grip, so the other records stood.

Randy joined us driving down from Prescott, and Joe's grandson Destinn has begun running his first official races. Welcome aboard guys and good luck.

With this first round in the books the points are taking shape. We have a tie for 3rd in the AZGT, with Randy pipping Dusty for the position by finishing higher in Sprint C. And Dusty again finds himself on the losing end of the equation, bumped from 3rd by Joe in the DJEPC.

We've decided to go ahead and try to run the FM season, but again it was anvils of technical problems falling from the sky. We were able to marshal three cars to the track. Hopefully we'll do better next time. Even so, 2012 runner-up DJ is off to a strong start dominating the race from flag to flag. Well done.

And in OCD we had a lot of cars finish on the same laps keeping the points close together. Brad pulled the biggest lead, capturing all six bonus points. The only DNF's of the day have dropped Randy and Joe back a little, but with the full season ahead they've got plenty of laps to catch up.

2013 Season, Week 2

Week 2 returns us to the FunRunFeb circuit. This Joe design was a great layout that flowed really well. We have only run this overlooked track once many years ago, but we will certainly visit it more often in future seasons.

We don't have records from the last time this circuit was run, so all laps today were record setters. After 294 scale miles of racing, DJ edged out Brad by 0.013sec to capture the overall track record with a 09.150 in the DJEPC.

Brad did capture the class records for AZGT with a 09.515 lap and OCD with a 09.249. Dusty claimed the fastest lap for FM with a 10.191.

The new Handicap System in DJEPC has begun to operate, elevating Hood to a win in the first round. But that benefit worked against him in the second round dropping him to third when Joe got the edge by 4.583sec.

In FM Dusty scored his first win of the season which moves him into the points lead by 3 points.

Positions have begun to shake up a little in the various series, but the points are still close together so its anyone's game with seven rounds to go.

2013 Season, Week 3

We're back at the legendary Christiansenring for the first Petit Le Man round of the year.

312 scale miles saw Brad smash his old track record by 0.339 with a new time of 8.168 set in the OCD. He also overturned his AZGT class record by almost the same amount (0.302), turning a 8.512 lap.

Dusty came up 0.062sec short of toppling Hood's old FM class record, and Brad set the initial DJEPC record with a 8.528 in his Porsche GT1.

The AZGT was a very close race. For 30min the top three drivers fought for position down to the last lap, and fast laps across the top six were only 0.45sec apart! (Randy may have been fighting for the lead as well, but a transponder problem missed some of his laps). Joe and DJ are now tied in points, with DJ taking over the standings by finishing higher this race.

In DJEPC the handicaps are getting tougher to overcome. Hood's handicap moved Dusty up in the CW round which moved him ahead of Joe in the points, only to lose the spot in the CCW round. The CCW round was brutally difficult for everyone except Joe and Brad, who blazed by the field to win despite a -4 HC.

Dusty battled DJ to the last lap in FM to score his second win and retain the points lead. Joe suffered mechanical failure in his steering before the race start and was unable to take the green flag. This allowed Randy to close the gap to only six points for third place in the standings.

2013 Season, Week 4

Today is our second run on the very fun Esses Circuit. Its a fast and flowing track with a very challenging kink entering the short straight, which was a little more problematic than our last run here.

Brad set the fast lap of 12.571 in 2011, and that time stood easily secure. In fact fast laps were off by 0.580sec on average. Such are the quirks of track conditions.

This was the first run for the DJEPC on the Esses, with an initial class record of 13.218 set by Brad in the CW direction. The CCW round was brutal, particularly maneuvering the kink. DJ suffered mechanical problems in the steering servo causing his DNS.

FM saw a spirited battle with four lead changes and Joe closing to within 1.041sec of the lead by the last lap, but Dusty held on to take the chequers. Meanwhile DJ set the fastest lap!

2013 Season, Week 5

Round 5 returns to the epic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This thing fills the room, but with the long NASCAR straights is fantastic for unleashing the throttle.

All the track records remain secure, with Paul's 10.142 holding the top speed. Brad set the first time record for the DJEPC at 11.100. Brad came up 0.664sec behind Joe's AZGT record. DJ was 1.368 and 0.737sec off Paul's records in F1 and OCD respectively.

It was a lot of fun with fender-to-fender action blasting down the straights and racing to the line. Not many shake ups in the points, but the DJEPC handicap system continues to mix the field and produce first time winners. And in FM Dusty fell to the back on a bad tyre choice while Joe battled DJ to the front scoring his first win of the season.

2013 Season, Week 6

The second half of the season is under way visiting the Phoenix USGP Circuit, which recreates the 1989 F1 street course run in downtown Phoenix.

All the track records stood today, again by about a half second margin. Brad edged Dusty out by 0.606sec to set the first DJEPC record for this circuit at 9.826, which was only 0.040sec behind the fastest lap of the day set by DJ in the OCD at 9.786. The overall track record stands with Brad's previous 9.401 run.

The DJEPC's handicap system continues to level the playing field and has everyone battling for wins. This was the series' first visit to this circuit, which normally runs CCW. Amazingly nobody smashed their car into the curved wall at Turn 15 while running CW, and Dusty went from worstest to firstest in that round.

In FM, DJ stormed to the front at lap 9 and stayed there to score his second victory. Dusty struggled to keep the rear end planted again, falling back to third as he and Joe battled to the last lap for position, crossing the line 0.340sec apart. This moves DJ to within 7pts of the Championship lead.

The OCD was a spirited battle with more cars than usual running up front and snagging those coveted Lead Lap Bonus points, and DJ captured two of the three Fast Lap Bonus points.

2013 Season, Week 7

This is our first time back at Zonieland in many years. Far enough back I don't have records on it, so all of today's times are new track records.

While the track had a 9-10sec pace, Brad set the blisteringly fast overall track record of 8.654 in the OCD. In a rare upset, Dusty snatched the AZGT class record away from Brad with a 9.199sec lap. And DJ was nearly a second faster than the field in FM setting the record at 9.224. Brad also set the record in the DJEPC, very close to his fastest with an 8.712.

It was a day of really close battles with lots of cars finishing on the same lap. Most notably was the fender-to-fender photo finish in the AZGT with Brad eeking out the victory by just 0.024sec!

In FM, Dusty needed to finish ahead of DJ to retain his championship lead, and succeeded with DJ hotly pursuing just 2.781sec behind. And in OCD Brad pushed like hell, using that overall record setting speed to edge out Hood by 5.133sec.

A special nod to our rookie Destinn who continues to improve, and did a good job racing clean amid all that swirling battle.

It was a great day of very competitive racing on a very fun track. Zonieland will certainly not be overlooked in our future track rotations.

2013 Season, Week 8

This week was an old favorite from our Hermann Tilke of RCP, Bill Christiansen, the Wacked 4 circuit.

Brad broke the old track record by half a second with an 8.299sec lap in the OCD. He also set the initial DJEPC class record of 8.880. All the other records stood. Brad came up 0.066 short of his previous AZGT record, while Dusty was 0.057 behind Joe's FM record.

Just one round remains in the 2013 season. While most of the championships have been mathematically decided, there are still positions in contention throughout the fields.

Hood is only 9pts behind Dusty for 2nd in the AZGT, with Joe and DJ trading 4th and 5th by 1pt over the last two weeks. 2nd-4th can be traded in the DJEPC, and conceivably 1st-5th could change hands in the OCD.

2013 Season, Week 9

The Chequered flag has fallen on the 2013 season. As the dust settles and victories celebrated, here are some stats from the 75 races of 2013:

Distance: 4093 laps, covering 101.30 miles (2836.48mi at 1:28 scale)
Most Wins: Unsurprisingly Brad with 52. Next closest was Dusty with 13
Fastest Lap: Brad with a 7.807 at the Chutes and Ladders Circuit
Records Broken: 3 track records fell and 3 class records were beaten
Biggest Mover: Dusty gained 2 spots over the season start in AZGT
DNF's: 12 / DNS's: 2. Down sharply from 2012, good job

The final race of the year had some close calls and strategies. DJ snagged 4th from Joe by 2pts. Dusty scored his first class win of the season with a one-stop strategy while the others used two, allowing him to capitalize on Brad's steering problems in the closing laps.

In the DJEPC Joe held onto 2nd over Hood by 3pts, but would have lost it if he hadn't passed Dusty in the final few laps of the last race!

In OCD Hood grabbed 3rd away from DJ by only 4pts in the final Sprint.

FM was bitter-sweet parade laps as all positions were locked (as long as Dusty took the Green Flag) for this final season of our beloved open wheel series.
